WAUSM is interested in applicants that have experience in instruction in medical microbiology and immunology at the pre-clerkship level of medical education, We are especially seeking candidates who are motivated to prepare students for the USMLE Step 1 examination and who are eager to learn and implement collaborative approaches to medical education.

WAUSM provides an exciting opportunity for individuals that wish to join an energetic team of medical educators that are committed to delivering a modern, dynamic, collaborative and innovative medical education program. Our students study medicine in a highly integrated, systems-based, hybrid curriculum that incorporates active learning strategies into large and small group settings. With a powerful focus on active, case-based learning; robust simulation; and early exposure to clinical patients, WAUSM students have an integrated learning experience with individualized support that prepares them to excel in the clerkship portion of their studies, and beyond. The pre-clerkship foundational sciences program is built around a 5-semester (15 weeks per term) model of instruction with basic science concepts and competencies related to patient centered care integrated and woven throughout. The current campus includes multi-functional academic learning spaces, student study, tutoring and leisure spaces, faculty offices and collaboration areas, simulation and clinical exam rooms and outdoor spaces.
WAUSM operates on three terms per year with a new class of students matriculating each term. Therefore, teaching duties and administrative responsibilities continue throughout the year. A focus on teaching, student learning and support is paramount, and we look to individuals who can provide excellence in these areas. Positions are located in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Actively teach, advise, mentor, and evaluate students in a manner that exemplifies excellence and care.
- Prepare teaching materials including cases, presentations, pre-reading assignments, practice questions, quizzes, workbooks or other as required.
- Facilitate small and large group active learning sessions.
- Assist in the creation and review of formative and summative assessments to evaluate student progress and performance. Proctor examinations as required.
- Revise teaching materials and techniques to stay current and innovative, aligning with the continuous improvement of the curriculum.
- Assist leadership in ensuring that the curriculum is integrated, clinically relevant, delivered in a logical manner and that content is at a depth and breadth suitable for learners who will enter clinical practice.
- Ensure that all teaching materials, communications, posts, assessment materials and any other materials delivered to students are updated, current and polished.
- Support students through active participation in the Center for Academic Success and collaborate with the Department of Medical Education and the Center for Academic Success in their initiatives as required.
- Participate in and support standing committees, task forces, academic and operational plans and initiatives as appointed / elected and/or determined by the Assistant Dean and Chair.
- Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean and Chair or Dean.
Requirements
Education, Experience and Attributes:
- Earned doctoral degree (PhD, MD or MD/PhD, or equivalent degree) from an accredited institution of higher education.
- Willingness to work collaboratively with a team to build a medical school.
- Commitment to team-based learning with a broad base of knowledge and the ability to facilitate multidisciplinary student learning.
- Evidence of excellence in medical education preferred, with demonstrated teaching/facilitating experience and skill in presenting to students and colleagues.
- Evidence of committee work and participation in other initiatives.
- Experience with curriculum development and continuous improvement.
- Experience with assessment programs and the ability to lead successful programmatic changes based upon assessment results and adult student learning.
- Solid technological skills and experience with virtual learning platforms (Canvas), computer-assisted delivery of didactic and active learning content, video-conferencing and other academic / computing platforms (Wooclap, Zoom, Microsoft suite and Teams, etc.).
- Ability and desire to work with others in a collegial and collaborative atmosphere.
- Excellent communication skills in English. Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with faculty, staff, and students.
- Exhibit flexibility, adaptability and be open to and embrace creative, innovative, "break the mold" ideas of others.
- Comfortable living an island lifestyle and embracing that experience.
